2003

Hi there everyone,
Well there it was - Jazmataz - a jazz club in Southland!  We had ten sessions during the year and this is my thank you to everyone involved ....

I've been hugely impressed with the time and effort everyone has shown, and rapt with your support for the concept of a jazz club.  Sincere thank-yous go to all the performers in all the bands. You played for pitiful financial returns to keep the spark of jazz glowing in the South and brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

The bands which played at the club during the year were:-

Bruce Chilton and the Crazy Rhythm Big Band (twice)
Rusdikbil
The Ashley Windsor Trio (twice)
The Ashley Windsor Trio with Veronica McCarrison
Trevor Tattersfield with Tatt's Jazz (twice)
Resin 8
The Ross Ogilvy Trio
Alastair Monteath with In Walked Bud
The Monteath-Garrett Quintet
The Verdon College Jazz band
The Russell Davidson All-Stars
The Russell Davidson Quintet

In addition, the 'house band' Windjammers played at every session.  My sincere thanks to Richard Parsons (drums) and Bill Hainstock (bass) without whose unstinting efforts Windjammers and the club could not have run.

Thanks also go to our behind-the-scenes man John Griffiths for his wonderful exploits on the computer in setting up the Jazmataz website.  Neither must we forget the managements of Tillermans and Kiwi Legends for their willingness and support in hosting the club.

Windjammers was a jam band and relied upon people joining in.  We have been privileged to have had the opportunity of sharing music in the band at various times with:

Alastair Monteath, Ashley Windsor, Jimmy Kirkpatrick, Ken Wellington, John Husband, Ross Ogilvy, Judith Smeeton, Simon Dark, Brett Garrett, Russell Davidson, Rance Fairweather, Mike Burrows, Andre Lamb and Joe Setefano.  Particular thanks go to Ken Wellington - a staunch supporter of Windjammers.

There will be no club meeting in December or January.  What happens next year is, at this stage, anybody's guess.

Thanks again everyone for sharing the vision,
Russ Dear
